Feeding Farmers, Feeding Community: Two Decades of Cheesecake Duty
For 21 years—yes, twenty-one—I've held the position of "Cheesecake Duty" for my mom Kathy's catering business. What started as a simple assignment has grown into a legacy I'm incredibly proud of. And yes, realizing it's been over two decades makes me feel a little ancient, but we press on with a laugh.
Cheesecake Duty has seen a lot of change through the years.
Starting young, I learned the ropes, and eventually earned enough seniority to work my way to owning the business. The one job where I am still guaranteed Cheesecake Duty is the annual Compeer and Farm Bureau Customer Appreciation Picnic. We truly love seeing our friends at this job. It is just as much about the people as it is about the desserts (at least for me). It's one of those events that reminds me why I continue to do the work I am doing.
Our menu includes twice baked mashed potatoes, seasoned green beans, potato chips, and lots of homemade, handcrafted desserts! Every scrap around here finds its purpose– nothing’s wasted during prep, and we sure hope every bite will be savored.
The People Who Make It Happen
Events like this don't happen overnight. We're so grateful to Annabelle Schaffnit, our Adams County Farm Bureau manager, who is an absolute pleasure to work with. She spends countless hours organizing special details so everyone can come together for one yummy picnic-style dinner with lots of fun sprinkled in.
Speaking of fun—did you see Kelvin Triplett from Compeer at the fair handing out milkshake tickets? These moments remind us how many good people are putting in the work behind the scenes. Talking with him at the fair was a highlight, and I can’t wait to see him this week.
For me, this event represents something bigger than just another catering gig. It's about connection. It's about honoring the farmers who grow the food we serve, and the families who sit down to eat it together. There's something special about seeing everyone in one place, sharing a meal, catching up on life.

To the farmers, the volunteers, and the families who show up again and again: thank you. We love seeing familiar faces, making new connections, and celebrating what we can create together over good food.
